Quarantine Hobbies: Music and French with Gael Maldonado

Samiha Mahmood, Editor-in-Chief

In the midst of all that is amiss, people seek to find a sense of sanity within the fibers of various activities, notably music and the learning of new languages. Music serves many different purposes in people’s lives, everything from creating a sense of comfort,  to raising the joy in an environment,  to fueling the fire for passion. Gael Maldonado, 15, Newport, Oregon, developed a newfound love for music, more specifically, playing the guitar and writing music. He states how simply experiencing music was not enough, he wanted to see what it would be like to make the very thing he enjoyed the most. With nothing but time, he picked up his guitar and started his journey. Gael also expresses how it’s different from other things he has tried before. “It’s an art platform. I’ve done a lot of other things, but music is something else. You can write poems for lyrics and you can just make cute melodies. It’s soothing more than anything once you get into it,” Gael says. Along with music, he has taken on French–mainly with the hopes of looking appealing on resumes that would be needed to fulfill his dreams, but to also “hit on French girls… don’t tell Savannah” (his girlfriend). All things taken into consideration, if anyone finds themselves with the sudden urge to utilize the time on their hands, they should feel free to explore the world of music and foreign languages.
