Quarantine Hobbies: Skating with Maia Stout

Interests in skating have reached a spike in popularity recently. Maia Stout, 15, from Yachats, Oregon voices her love for this activity. Her interest in skating sparked due to various factors. She found herself to be at a loss for things to do as most of her time previously was spent with other people. With quarantine, she had to adopt a new lifestyle to cater towards Covid-19 restrictions. Here, she was made to adopt new hobbies and interests, one of which was skating. Most of her family members and friends were all into skating, therefore influencing her to want to get into it, as well. The main thing Maia finds appealing about it is that it isn’t like school or soccer where one’s style and creativity are limited. Skating opens limitless doors towards expression, and if one puts genuine effort and time into it, many things can be accomplished. She furthers her claim of freedom from restrictions and its benefits by stating, “…how far you want to go is up to your own standards rather than your coaches or teachers, and this full control over it teaches you obligation and dedication.” She also expresses the setbacks she’s faced, especially as a girl, as people would judge no matter what. However, the sense of accomplishment that blooms from learning new tricks or just mastering how to get comfortable with the feel of cruising along triumphs over all the cons. With the advantage of creativity, skill, efficiency, and peace, skating proves to be a good activity to engage in, especially during these times.
